A Legacy in Alberta's North
Peace River's first recorded formal funeral service was provided by a known George Fields, who operated an undertaking business in a small building on Main Street. He constructed caskets, prepared the decedents-from washing and dressing, casketing-and offered horse-drawn carriage processions for the funeral service.
The first documented record of a funeral in the northern Peace Country comes from Griep and Humphries Funeral Home (1947). Benny Griep & John Humphreys (Griep & Humphreys) purchased the Field business. They operated offices in High Prairie, Peace River, Fairview and McLennan. In 1963, a family from Calgary (the Allan Nixon family) purchased the operation. In Fairview, it was Moran Funeral Home who served families.
In 1967, Roger Winnicky became the proprietor and renamed it to "Chapel of Memories". The funeral home ran an ambulance services until 1973. Vern Weber, in 1979, became a stakeholder and operating manager. Moran Funeral Home in Fairview soon became a subsidiary. After nearly 30 years of operation, Slave Lake's Wilton Funeral Service merged with Chapel of Memories.
Earlier this decade, the community Vern (and Marion) Weber so well-served. Locally-raised protegés Chester Dodgson and Rémi Tardif have stepped forward, in continuing the care that the Pioneers of the Peace Country have come to expect.

In the lobby Peace River's Chapel's foyer, a pillar of brick supports a plaque indicating: "Show me the manner in which a nation or community cares for its dead and I will measure with mathematical exactness the tender sympathies of its people, their respect for the laws of the land and their loyalty to high ideals." -Gladstone.
