A Few Texas Funeral Facts

Although, Texas state law does not require families to use a licensed funeral director or funeral home, most hospitals, hospices and nursing homes will not release the deceased to anyone other than a licensed funeral director. Funeral home directors have experience assisting the bereaved in coping with death. They will help arrange transportation of the body, complete all necessary paperwork and coordinate the funeral service per the family wishes.

Funeral services are recognized rituals that allow the living to show respect for the dead and to help survivors begin the grief process. Funeral homes provided a comforting environment in which to recognize death and its finality, as well as a resource for families to find answers and support during a difficult time.

In Texas, embalming is required by the state. However, most funeral homes will require the deceased be embalmed if an open casket or visitation is part of the funeral service.

Cremation is available in Texas but only after the deceased has been dead for 48 hours. The County Medical Examiner or Justice of the Peace can waive this requirement.
